1. A method, comprising:
impregnating a region of a glass sheet with a filler material in a liquid state by filling interstitial voids within the region of the glass sheet with the filler material, the glass sheet comprising a plurality of glass soot particles and having a first major surface, a second major surface opposite the first major surface, and edge surfaces extending between the first and second major surfaces, wherein the first and second major surfaces have respective major surface areas larger than the edge surfaces such that the major surface areas are each at least 5 times that of a third largest surface of the glass sheet; and
solidifying the filler material subsequent to the impregnating to form a glass/filler composite region of the glass sheet, wherein the glass/filler composite region comprises a first surface region extending from the first major surface into a first portion of an interior of the glass sheet, and wherein the glass sheet further comprises a free region that is substantially free of the filler material.
