1. A nanostructured ceramic coating having a thickness in excess of 100 nm, comprising titanium oxide nanostructures in an amorphous ceramic phase of titanium oxide or zinc oxide nanostructures in an amorphous ceramic phase of zinc oxide, comprising at least one of nanoparticles, nanoblades or nanorods precipitated or grown from an aqueous solution of a ceramic precursor directly on a surface of a polymeric substrate with a maximum temperature of 100° C. during the precipitation of the nanostructures.
