1. A patient support system comprising:
a support structure including a base arranged for movement along floor surfaces, an intermediate frame spaced above the base, and a patient support deck coupled to the intermediate frame;
a mattress disposed on the patient support deck comprising a secondary support surface for supporting a patient, the mattress extending between a head end and a foot end and including one or more cushions, a patient raising device including plurality of patient raising inflation bladders each shaped for inflation vertically, and a cover enclosing the one or more cushions and the patient raising device therein;
a control unit including a motor coupled to a pump disposed in fluid communication with the patient raising device;
a user input device configured to provide an input signal; and
a controller disposed in communication with the control unit and the user input device, the controller being configured to:
select operation of the patient raising device based on the input signal, and
operate the motor of the control unit to direct air with the pump to the patient raising device and control inflation and deflation vertically of the plurality of patient raising inflation bladders to create a wave force to vertically raise and lower the secondary support surface of the mattress for pushing the patient towards the head end to raise the patient from a slouched position to a raised position.
