1. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system comprising:
a magnet system configured to generate a static magnetic field (B0) about at least a portion of a subject arranged in the MRI system;
a plurality of gradient coils configured to apply magnetic gradients to the static magnetic field;
a radio frequency (RF) system configured to apply an excitation field to the subject and acquire MR image data from the subject;
a computer system programmed to:
control the plurality of gradient coils and the RF system to perform a multi-pass, multi-echo or multi-repetition gradient echo pulse sequence that includes a phase increment of an RF pulse of the multi-pass, multi-echo or multi-repetition gradient echo pulse sequence selected to encode diffusion information into a phase of MR signals, wherein the RF pulse is performed at a beginning and an end of each pass or repetition and a polarity of the phase increment is varied between passes or repetitions of the multi-pass or multi-repetition gradient echo pulse;
control the plurality of gradient coils and the RF system to acquire the MR signals as MR data;
process the MR data to determine MR signals corresponding to diffusion in the subject when acquiring the MR signals; and
generate at least one of an image or a map of the subject indicating the diffusion in the subject from the MR data.
