1. A system comprising:
a reactor drum;
a heat source that heats gas contained within the system to a temperature sufficient to torrefy particles within the reactor drum;
a device that moves the heated gas thereby forming a heated gas stream that passes through the reactor drum;
a duct system communicatively coupled to the heat source and the reactor drum thereby forming a recirculation loop that allows the heated gas to make multiple passes through the reactor drum; and
a region that promotes separation of a first hydrocarbon compound contained within the heated gas stream from a remainder of the heated gas stream, the remainder of the heated gas stream including a second hydrocarbon compound that is heavier than the first hydrocarbon compound.
