1. A vehicle control method executed by a controller, wherein the controller executes sailing stop control in which, when a drive source stop condition is satisfied during traveling, a drive source is stopped and an engagement element provided in a power transmission path between the drive source and a continuously variable transmission is released for traveling by inertia, the method comprising:
restarting the drive source when the drive source stop condition becomes unsatisfied;
estimating an acceleration intention of a driver, and
setting, in a case of a driver having acceleration intention, a gear ratio of the continuously variable transmission to be larger than that of a case where the driver does not have the acceleration intention, and then engaging the engagement element,
wherein in the case of the driver having the acceleration intention, the controller executes a first control in which the continuously variable transmission is downshifted to increase an input shaft rotation speed of the continuously variable transmission and then the engagement element is engaged, and
wherein the controller executes the first control when a vehicle speed is equal to or higher than a vehicle speed at which the gear ratio of the continuously variable transmission becomes lowest during the execution of the sailing stop control.
