1. A Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) reporter nanoplex comprising a compound of the formula:

OG Complex Work Unit Chemistry
wherein:
L is a linker; and
Ⓢ is a SERS tag;
wherein the SERS tag comprises at least one Raman reporter molecule disposed between a gold nanostar and a silica layer on its surface, wherein the at least one Raman reporter molecule is selected from 4-nitrothiophenol (NTP), 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA), malachite green isothiocyanate (MGITC), and rhodamine B isothiocyanate (RBITC).
