1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:
receiving, by one or more processors of a mobile device, a list of wireless communication addresses, each wireless communication address uniquely identifying one or more vehicles covered by an insurance policy of a respective insured driver;
storing, by the one or more processors, the list in a memory operably connected to the one or more processors;
determining, by the one or more processors and upon the mobile device entering into a threshold communication range of a first vehicle, a first wireless communication address of the first vehicle, wherein the first wireless communication address is determined by the one or more processors without establishing a communication link between the mobile device and the first vehicle;
determining, by the one or more processors, that the first wireless communication address matches a second wireless communication address included in the list of wireless communication addresses stored in the memory;
causing, by the one or more processors and based on determining that the first wireless communication address matches the second wireless communications address, one or more sensors of the mobile device to capture sensor data;
identifying, by the one or more processors, based on the sensor data, a movement of the first vehicle indicative of a beginning of a vehicle trip of the first vehicle;
switching, by the one or more processors and based on identifying the movement, a mobile application operating on the mobile device from a background state to an active state, wherein, in the active state, the mobile application;
receives telematics data directly from
the one or more sensors of the mobile device during the vehicle trip, and
collects the telematics data in a memory associated with the mobile device
without maintaining a communication link with
the first vehicle or a third-party telematics device; and
determining, by the one or more processors and based on the telematics data, a driving behavior of the insured driver.
