1. A method comprising:
providing in a transmitter of a station in a wireless network a frame having a first field including a number of preamble segments and a second field including a number of data segments, wherein the transmitter includes preamble boost circuitry coupled to a radio frequency (RF) amplifier and includes a number of switching circuits to select between a boosted and non-boosted RF gain for each of the number of preamble segments; and
operating the transmitter to transmit at least one of the number of preamble segments with at least a first transmit power, and to transmit the number of data segments of the second field with a second transmit power, wherein the first transmit power is greater than the second transmit power, and wherein operating the transmitter to transmit at least one of the number of preamble segments with at least the first transmit power comprises adjusting a gain of the RF amplifier on a per field basis.
