1. A method of preparing crystalline vanadium oxide, the method comprising:
(i) providing a vanadium oxide precursor comprising vanadium oxide particles;
(ii) annealing the vanadium oxide particles at a first O2 partial pressure of between 2 ppm and 500 ppm, thereby preparing the crystalline vanadium oxide in tetragonal form; and
(iii) determining a first temperature T1 at which a metastable VO2 form and/or a tetragonal VO2 form is present first formed at the first O2 partial pressure.
