1. A surveillance system comprising:
a first wide area imaging system including:
a first packaging,
a first image sensor housed within the first packaging and configured to capture images of a first area under surveillance, the first image sensor providing image capture of a first predetermined image field, the captured images being used to produce a first wide-area image,
a global positioning system (GPS) receiver housed within the first packaging and configured to obtain GPS coordinates, and
a first processor housed within the first packaging and configured to control the image capture by the first image sensor and analyze the first wide-area image to detect an object of interest; and
a second wide area imaging system including:
a second packaging,
a second image sensor housed within the second packaging and configured to capture images of a second area under surveillance different from the first area under surveillance, the second image sensor providing image capture of a second predetermined image field, the captured images being used to produce a second wide-area image, and
a second processor configured to control the image capture by the second image sensor,
wherein when the first processor of the first wide area imaging system determines that a detected object of interest in the first wide-area image is moving out of the first area under surveillance and into the second area under surveillance, the first processor of the first wide area imaging system is configured to send at least the obtained GPS coordinates and an image of the detected object of interest to the second processor of the second wide area imaging system.
