1. A method comprising:
generating, by a processor, a modified first media content item including a first media content item received from a first client device associated with a first user and an invitation media overlay being overlaid on the first media content item, wherein the invitation media overlay comprises a name associated with a shared collection of media content items;
generating the shared collection of media content items, the shared collection of media content items comprises the modified first media content item;
causing the modified first media content item to be displayed by a second client device and a third client device;
receiving a selection of the invitation media overlay of the modified first media content item from the second client device and from the third client device that causes a second user of the second client device and a third user of the third client device to join a private group associated with the shared collection of media content items;
generating a modified second media content item including a second media content item from the second client device and the invitation media overlay being overlaid on the second media content item;
updating the shared collection of media content items to comprise the modified second media content item; and
causing the updated shared collection of media content items to be displayed by the first client device or the third client device.
