1. A method of increasing plant yield when grown in soil containing elevated levels of Al3+, said method comprising growing a plant comprising an exogenous nucleic acid on soil having an elevated level of Al3+, said exogenous nucleic acid comprising a heterologous promoter operably linked to a nucleotide sequence, wherein the nucleotide sequence encodes a polypeptide having 95 percent or greater sequence identity to the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 353, and selecting the plant for having increased plant weight when grown in soil containing the elevated level of Al3+ as compared to the corresponding plant weight a control plant that does not comprise said nucleic acid, wherein said plant is a switchgrass or rice plant, and wherein the elevated level of Al3+ is defined as a level of Al3+ that is phytotoxic and inhibits root growth in wild type control plants.
