1. A method of removing one or more per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) from an aqueous phase comprising one or more PFASs, the method comprising dissolving in the aqueous phase a foaming agent of Formula (Ia):

or a salt thereof,
wherein R1 is SH, OH, CO2H or CH2CO2H; and
Ra is a C5-C10 alkyl group, a C5-C10 alkenyl group, a C5-C10 alkynyl group, a fluorinated C5-C10 alkyl group, a fluorinated C5-C10 alkenyl group or a fluorinated C5-C10 alkynyl group;
forming a foam from the aqueous phase and a gas; and
separating the foam from the aqueous phase.
