1. A system comprising:
a housing;
a needle fixedly secured to the housing, the needle comprising a distal tip configured to be inserted into a vessel of a patient, the needle defining an outer surface;
a catheter that comprises a distal end and an inner surface that defines a lumen, wherein the catheter is configured to be in an undeployed state in which a portion of the needle is positioned within the lumen of the catheter and the distal tip of the needle is at a position that is distal to the distal end of the catheter, the catheter further comprising a catching region of reduced diameter that extends inwardly at the distal end of the catheter;
a catheter connection hub releasably coupled to the housing, the catheter extending through and being movable relative to the catheter connection hub when the catheter is in the undeployed state;
a catheter hub core fixedly secured to the catheter, the catheter hub core being configured to attach to the catheter connection hub as the catheter is advanced distally relative to the catheter connection hub from the undeployed state to a deployed state; and
a longitudinally extending stiffener positioned between the outer surface of the needle and the inner surface of the catheter, the stiffener comprising a distal end that engages the catching region of the catheter as the catheter is advanced from the undeployed state to the deployed state.
