1. A hospital bed, comprising:
a frame;
a plurality of extendable patient support panels mounted to the frame, each patient support panel including a central section and at least one coplanar side section selectively movable laterally towards and away from the central section, the at least one coplanar side section being slidably connected to the corresponding central section;
a slide mechanism to allow sliding movement of the at least one side section relative to the central section; and
a width locking assembly operatively connected to the at least one side section, the width locking assembly being movable between a locked configuration in which lateral movement of the at least one side section is prevented and an unlocked configuration which allows lateral movement of the at least one side section, the width locking assembly comprising:
a handle that is movable by a user between a locked position corresponding to the locked configuration and an unlocked position corresponding to the unlocked configuration;
a locking tube extending laterally of the bed and defining at least one elongated indent, the at least one elongated indent comprising a linear portion and a plurality of notches extending from the linear portion, the notches corresponding to predetermined discrete positions of the at least one side section; and
a pin operatively connected to the handle and movable along a length of the at least one elongated indent, the pin being selectively rotated into the notches by moving the handle to the locked position in order to lock the at least one side section in one of the predetermined discrete positions.
