1. An engine system, comprising:
an engine configured to consume fuel and air to generate an exhaust gas stream;
an exhaust system configured to channel the exhaust gas stream from the engine to a tailpipe;
an aftertreatment system in the exhaust system, the aftertreatment system including a catalyst;
a transmission system coupled with the engine, the transmission system including a transmission and a torque converter coupled with the transmission through a torque transfer element;
element to increase a load on the engine by the torque converter; and
a controller configured to determine, prior to starting the engine, whether heating of the catalyst is needed.
