1. A method comprising:
receiving, by an interface of a printer system, an expiration date;
determining, by a processor of the printer system, a number of transmission layers to use in a color changing expiration indicator based at least in part on a time period that commences on a print date of the color changing expiration indicator and that ends on the received expiration date; and
determining, by the processor, a number of barrier layers to use in the color changing expiration indicator based at least in part on the time period;
determining, by the processor, a thickness of a reactive layer to use in the color changing expiration indicator based at least in part on the determined number of transmission layers and the determined number of barrier layers; and
printing, by the printer system, the color changing expiration indicator that includes the reactive layer, the determined number of transmission layers, and the determined number of barrier layers.
