1. A computer-implemented method to assess fragmentation of a storage system, the method comprising:
providing an allocation unit (AU) layout including used allocation units and available allocation units;
scanning at least a portion of the AU layout to determine one or more AU patterns, wherein the one or more AU patterns include at least one mixed pattern having a used allocation unit adjacent to an available allocation unit;
measuring fragmentation based, at least in part, on the determined one or more AU patterns; and
managing the storage system, based, at least in part, on the measured fragmentation.
