1. A head-mounted display system comprising:
a light source comprising a plurality of spatially distinct light output locations;
a spatial light modulator configured to receive light from the light output locations of the light source and to modulate the received light to form images of a virtual object; and
optics configured to direct light from the spatial light modulator for propagation into an eye of a viewer,
wherein the display system is configured to display the virtual object on a depth plane by injecting a set of images of the virtual object into the eye within a flicker fusion threshold of 1/60 of a second, wherein each of the depth planes is at a different depth plane distance along an optical axis of the viewer,
wherein injecting the set of images comprises changing a path of the light from the light source to the spatial light modulator by changing a lateral separation between activated ones of the light output locations based upon the depth plane distance, and
wherein the lateral separation corresponds to an angular separation between different light beams propagating away from the optics, the different light beams for forming different images of a set of images, wherein the angular separation is greater for a closer depth plane than a farther depth plane.
