1. A method comprising the steps of:
inserting a percutaneous pump into a blood vessel of a patient;
while the percutaneous pump is in the patient, inserting a sheath into the blood vessel through which the percutaneous pump was inserted, wherein the sheath has a first lumen and a second lumen;
advancing the sheath over a catheter body of the percutaneous pump such that the catheter body is in the first lumen; and
maintaining patency of the second lumen while the catheter body is in the first lumen and the sheath is in the blood vessel for more than 6 hours.
