1. A root portion of a dental implant, comprising:
a core with an irregularly-shaped horizontal cross-section that is similar to, but smaller than, a shape of a corresponding horizontal cross-section of an extracted tooth root;
a porous layer positioned on a portion of an exterior surface of the core; and
a strut extending from an external surface of the core into the porous layer along a portion of a length of the core.
