1. A secondary electrochemical cell comprising an anode;
a cathode comprising electrochemically active cathode material, said electrochemically active cathode material comprises one or more electrochemically active cathode materials chosen from the group of lithium-transition-metal phosphate, sodium-transition-metal phosphate, and lithium-metal oxide; a separator comprising one or more separator materials chosen from the group of polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinylidene, and poly(vinylidene fluoride) disposed between said anode and said cathode; and an electrolyte, said electrolyte comprising at least one salt dissolved in at least one organic solvent, wherein said separator in combination with said electrolyte has an area-specific resistance of less than about 2 ohm-cm2 and wherein said lithium-metal oxide comprises one or more lithium-metal oxides chosen from the group of LiCoO2, LiNixMn2O4, Li(NixCoyAlz)O2, Li(NixMnyCoz)O2, and aLi2MnO3.(1-a)Li(NixMnyCoz)O2, wherein 0<a<1, 0≤x≤1, 0≤y≤1, and 0≤z≤1.
