1. A method comprising:
communicatively coupling, by a mobile device, to a tracking device, wherein a first measure of signal strength of a first signal transmitted by tracking device at a time of the coupling is greater than a signal strength threshold;
receiving, by the mobile device, a second signal transmitted by the tracking device;
determining, by the mobile device, a second measure of signal strength based on the received second signal; and
while the mobile device is still communicatively coupled to the tracking device and in response to determining, by the mobile device, that the determined second measure of signal strength is less than the signal strength threshold, generating, by the mobile device, a notification indicating that the tracking device was left behind, the mobile device configured to display or emit the generated notification, wherein the signal strength threshold is lower when the tracking device is located within a smart zone than when the tracking device is located outside the smart zone, wherein the smart zone comprises an area within which an expected behavior of the tracking device is known.
