assigning, by a computing system and at a first point in time, a symbol to a user device;
causing, by the computing system, the user device to generate and output the symbol on a display of the user device in response to a user of the user device inputting an item;
capturing, by the computing system, one or more images via one or more image capture devices at one or more moments in time;
detecting, by the computing system, the symbol depicted in the one or more images;
determining, by the computing system a number of times that the symbol was detected;
determining, by the computing system and at a second point in time subsequent to the first point in time, a number of items in a receptacle associated with the user;
determining that a difference between the number of times and the number of items exceeds a threshold maximum difference; and
initiating, by the computing system, an audit of the user based at least in part on determining that the difference between the number of times and the number of items exceeds the threshold maximum difference.
