1. A method for interpreting user input provided by a human interface device, the method comprising:
identifying a presence of the human interface device;
obtaining, based on the identified presence, sensor data from a sensing system that tracks a magnetic field emanating from the human interface device;
performing pattern matching of the sensor data against a generalized set of sensor data patterns that are location dependent to obtain a type of the user input, the type of the user input corresponding with an operation performable by a data processing system;
identifying the operation to be performed based on the type of the user input; and
performing the operation.
