1. A method for producing/releasing/delivering/excreting mucin from and/or in the cornea of a subject in need thereof, comprising the step of administering to the eye or eyes of the subject a composition comprising a safe and effective amount of a compound and/or extract having retinol-like properties and/or benefits for producing/releasing/delivering/excreting mucin from and/or in the cornea, wherein the compound or extract is selected from one or more of:
i) extracts from plants of the genus Acronychia, Licaria, and/or Trigonella;
ii) bacterial extracts of the species of the genus Actinomyces; and
iii) compounds of Formula (I):

a) the dotted lines represent a single or double bound; and optionally one of the dotted lines is a double bound;
b) R1 represents an H, a carbon chain that is linear, cyclic, or branched, saturated or unsaturated, comprising from 1 to 20 carbon atoms;
c) R2 represents a carbon chain that is linear, cyclic, or branched, saturated or unsaturated, comprising from 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and optionally comprises a methyl (—CH3) or methylene (═CH2) moiety; and
d) A represents a carbon chain, linear, ringed, or branched, saturated or unsaturated, comprising from 1 to 20 carbon atoms; optionally from 1 to 10 carbon atoms; optionally 6 carbon atoms; optionally an aromatic moiety; optionally a phenyl moiety; optionally 2-methyl-prop-1,3-diene; wherein optionally, the composition comprises an ophthalmologically acceptable carrier.
