1. A foot pedal assembly for controlling a robotic surgical system, the foot pedal assembly comprising:
a foot pedal base;
a foot pedal coupled to the foot pedal base and operable to activate a surgical tool of the robotic surgical system;
a sensor operable to detect a target object hovering over the foot pedal; and
a processor operable to provide an alert when the processor determines contact between the target object and the foot pedal would result in an unintentional activation of the surgical tool and prevent the foot pedal from activating the surgical tool when the processor determines contact between the target object and the foot pedal would result in the unintentional activation of the surgical tool.
