1. An LED based illumination device comprising:
an LED based light engine configured to emit an amount of light in response to an electrical current received by the LED based light engine;
a light control and communications gateway (LCCG) electrically coupled to the LED based light engine, the LCCG comprising:
a lighting control network interface communicatively coupled to a lighting control network, wherein one or more light control commands for a plurality of LED based illumination devices is received on the lighting control network interface; and
one or more processors configured to:
receive a request to join the lighting control network from a mobile electronics device via the lighting control network interface;
authenticate the mobile electronics device is allowed to join the lighting control network; and
communicate an indication to the mobile electronics device using the lighting control network interface that the mobile electronics device is allowed to access the lighting control network.
