12. An apparatus comprising:
at least one processing device comprising a processor coupled to a memory;
the at least one processing device being configured:
to receive at least one notification from a switch of a switch fabric coupled between one or more host devices and a storage system, the notification being received in at least one of (i) a given one of the one or more host devices and (ii) a data protection appliance coupled to the switch, the notification being a particular type of notification for which the given host device and/or the data protection appliance has previously registered with the switch in order to automatically receive multiple separate and distinct instances of notifications of that particular type from the switch over time;
to select, in the at least one of the given host device and the data protection appliance, a particular one of a plurality of zoning sets based at least in part on the one or more received notifications; and
to send an indication of the selected zoning set from the at least one of the given host device and the data protection appliance to the switch;
wherein the at least one processing device is further configured to perform at least one filtering operation on the one or more received notifications to determine whether or not a zoning configuration change is appropriate before performing at least one of the selecting of the particular zoning set and the sending of the indication of the selected zoning set to the switch; and
wherein the filtering operation implements a hysteresis effect by limiting a number of zoning configuration changes that can be made within a specified time period.
