1. A light emitting apparatus comprising:
an electronics board having an LED attach region thereof;
an array of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) having corresponding light output surfaces, each LED (i) having transverse dimensions less than about 1.0 millimeters and (ii) being separated from adjacent LEDs of the array by less than about 0.10 millimeters, the LED array being positioned on and connected to the electronics board at the LED attach region so as to receive one or more drive signals via the electronics board;
a corresponding optical coupling structure disposed on the corresponding light output surface of each LED of the array, each optical coupling structure comprising a plurality of light scattering particles coated with or embedded in a layer of transparent material, the layer of transparent material being in physical contact with the corresponding light output surface and having an index of refraction matching or approximately matching an index of refraction of the corresponding light output surface; and
a power and control module connected to or positioned on the electronics board so as to deliver the one or more drive signals to the LED array via the electronics board.
