1. A management system for an optical line system, the management system comprising:
one or more processors and memory storing instructions that, when executed, cause the one or more processors to
receive State of Polarization (SOP) measurements from one or more optical components in the optical line system, wherein the SOP measurements are taken while traffic-bearing channels are operating,
monitor health of one or more fibers based on the SOP measurements, and
provide the health of the one or more fibers to enable one or more of 1) configuring a transmitter for use on the one or more fibers, 2) selecting a type of transmitter for use on the one or more fibers, 3) selecting a type of receiver for use on the one or more fibers, 4) configuring a receiver for use on the one or more fibers, and 5) determining whether to restore a failed connection from another fiber to the one or more fibers.
