1. A system to treat an eye, the system comprising:
a patient interface comprising an annular suction ring to engage an anterior surface of the eye, the suction ring comprising an opening to receive a portion of the eye and a channel to couple to the eye with suction, the patient interface defining a fluid volume over the eye adapted to contain a quantity of fluid to act as an optical transmissive medium when the suction ring is coupled to the eye;
a suction conduit in fluid communication with the suction ring to couple a suction source to the eye;
a monitoring circuit including a monitoring conduit in fluid communication with the suction ring and a monitoring pressure sensor to monitor pressure in the monitoring conduit, the monitoring conduit having a substantially smaller volume than the suction conduit; and
a processor coupled to the monitoring pressure sensor, the processor comprising instructions to interrupt firing of a laser when the pressure measured with the monitoring pressure sensor rises above a threshold amount.
