1. An electrochemical cell comprising:
an electrically conductive material layer;
a precursor material disposed on or adjacent to a first surface of the electrically conductive material layer, wherein the precursor material is disposed on or adjacent to the first surface of the electrically conductive material so as form a distinct, substantially continuous layer or the precursor material is disposed on or adjacent to the first surface of the electrically conductive material layer so as form a plurality of distinct precursor structures disposed on the first surface of the electrically conductive material layer in a predetermined pattern, and wherein the precursor material has an ionic conductivity less than about 10−4 S/cm; and
an electroactive material layer disposed on or adjacent to the precursor material.
