1. A catheter assembly comprising:
a catheter hub comprising a wall having an interior wall surface defining a cavity having a tip protector disposed therein;
a catheter tube having a distal opening extending distally of the catheter hub;
a needle, which has a lengthwise axis, a sharpened needle tip, and a crimp, a material build up, a bend or combinations thereof, passing through the catheter hub, the tip protector, and the catheter tube with the sharpened needle tip extending distally of the distal opening in a ready to use position;
the tip protector being removably held in the cavity of the catheter hub and comprises a proximal wall, a perimeter defining an opening having the needle passing therethrough, a first arm being a long arm having a first arm fixed end that is fixed relative to the proximal wall and a first arm free end that is freely movable located distally of the first arm fixed end and biased by a side of the needle, a second arm being a short arm having a second arm fixed end that is fixed relative to the proximal wall and a second arm free end that is freely movable located distally of the second arm fixed end and being shorter in length relative to the long arm, and a third arm having a third arm fixed end that is fixed relative to the proximal wall and a third arm free end that is freely movable located proximally of the third arm fixed end; the first arm free end, the second arm free end, and the third arm free end are spaced apart and movable relative to one another;
wherein the crimp, the material build up, the bend or the combinations thereof on the needle is configured to engage the perimeter defining the opening in a protective position in which the first arm free end extends across the lengthwise axis of the needle; and
wherein the third arm contacts the interior wall surface of the catheter hub and the tip protector is removably held in the cavity of the catheter hub in the ready to use position.
