1. A tubular flexible stent having proximal and distal end portions and a cylindrical shape, with luminal and abluminal surfaces and a thickness there between, the cylindrical shape defining a longitudinal axis, the tubular flexible stent comprising: a helical section having a plurality of longitudinally oriented strut members having consistent widths relative to each other and a plurality of circumferentially oriented hinge members connecting circumferentially adjacent strut members to form a band, the band being wrapped about the longitudinal axis in a substantially helical manner to form a plurality of helical windings and ring-like proximal and distal end sections, each ring-like end section having a plurality of longitudinally oriented strut members, a plurality of circumferentially oriented hinge members connecting each end of each longitudinally oriented strut member to a circumferentially adjacent strut member forming two sets of opposing hinges, such that one set of hinges is closer to the helical section than the other set of hinges and the hinges of the one set of hinges are perpendicularly aligned with respect to the longitudinal axis, and no incident angle, wherein the helical section comprises a proximal transition zone, a distal transition zone, and a central zone there between, each having a pitch and an incident angle, wherein the pitch corresponds to the number of strut members per band wrap, wherein the pitch and the incident angle of the proximal and distal transition zones are different than the central zone, wherein strut members in the proximal and distal transition zones have a length not less than strut members in the central zone and wherein the proximal and distal transition zones link the central zone to the proximal and distal end sections.
