1. A user equipment device comprising:
one or more antennas;
wireless circuitry configured to receive device-to-device (D2D) signals from one or more additional user equipment devices over the one or more antennas and configured to transmit one or more messages from the D2D signals to external communications equipment over the one or more antennas, the wireless circuitry being operable in a first operating mode in which the wireless circuitry consumes a first amount of power and supports a first service level and in a second operating mode in which the wireless circuitry consumes a second amount of power that is higher than the first amount of power and supports a second service level that is higher than the first service level; and
one or more processors configured to
switch the wireless circuitry from the first operating mode to the second operating mode in response to reception, in the D2D signals, of an amount of traffic that exceeds a threshold value.
