1. A method at a computing device within an Intelligent Transportation System, the method comprising:
determining, at the computing device, whether a non-expired Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) response for a certificate of the computing device is available;
when the non-expired OCSP response is available, signing a message with a private key associated with the certificate and appending the OCSP response;
when the non-expired OCSP response is not available, signing the message with the private key associated with the certificate; and
sending the message to a recipient.
