1. A method of controlling a gateway device comprising a network processor, a first communication system, and a second communication system, the method comprising:
generating a first congestion notification request signal and a second congestion notification request signal at the network processor to allow coordinated control of first network signals that are communicated between the first communication system and the network processor and of second network signals that are communicated between the second communication system and the network processor;
communicating the first congestion notification request signal from the network processor to the first communication system;
communicating the second congestion notification request signal from the network processor to the second communication system;
modifying the first network signals at the first communication system in response to the first congestion notification request signal to form first modified network signals to allow coordinated control of the first modified network signals relative to the first network signals and the second network signals; and
receiving the first modified network signals at the network processor.
