1. A system for treating a gas stream comprising NOx and/or SOx comprising:
a reaction vessel with an inlet for introducing the gas stream into the reaction vessel for passage of the gas stream through the reaction vessel, and an inlet for introducing an oxidizing agent into the reaction vessel, wherein the oxidizing agent comprises ClO2 in gas or liquid form; and
a turbulence inducing device disposed in the reaction vessel downstream from the gas stream inlet, wherein the turbulence inducing device is positioned before or after the oxidizing agent inlet and is configured to induce gas flow turbulence or swirl within the reaction vessel;
wherein the gas stream and oxidizing agent combine and are mixed together within the reaction vessel during passage of the gas stream within the reaction vessel and undergo reaction to cause the NOx and/or SOx component to be converted to at least one other compound, molecule or atom.
