1. A coordinated multi point (CoMP) controller for a wireless channel of a transmission medium in a wireless communications system including a first communication node, a second communication node, and a plurality of user equipment devices (UEs) disposed within an overlapping broadcast region from the first and second communication nodes, the controller including at least one processor and a memory configured to store computer-executable instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the controller to:
dynamically select the first communication node to be an anchor transmission point of a coordinated set of transmission points based on control feedback information from the plurality of UEs received by the first communications node and the second communications node,
cause the first communication node to (i) perform a clear channel assessment determination for the wireless channel, (ii) acquire a transmission opportunity as a result of the clear channel assessment determination, (iii) transmit a short packet to the plurality of UEs, wherein the short packet includes control channel information, and (iv) broadcast a coordinated transmission after the transmission of the short packet and the acquisition of the transmission opportunity;
detect at least one acknowledgement message received by the second communication node from at least one UE of the plurality of UEs in response to the short packet transmitted by the first communication node; and
align a coordinated transmission by the first communications node with the second communications node based on the detected at least one acknowledgement message.
