1. On a computing system comprising a head-mounted display (HMD) device and a case for the HMD device, the HMD device comprising a stereo camera system, a method for displaying a hologram via the HMD device, the method comprising:
detecting a trigger condition related to an ambient light level while the HMD device is removed from the case and while the HMD device is imaging a surrounding environment via the stereo camera system;
based at least upon the trigger condition, transmitting an instruction from the HMD device to a projector located on the case to output illumination light;
acquiring stereo image data of the capturing a surrounding environment by detecting the illumination light output by the projector;
determining a distance to an object in the surrounding environment based upon the stereo image data; and
displaying via the HMD device the hologram, the hologram comprising a left-eye image and a right-eye image each having a perspective based upon the distance determined.
