1. A mask for reducing transmission of a virus therethrough, comprising:
a coated substrate having a breathing resistance (95 L/min, EN 149:2001) of about 2 mbar or less and a water droplet absorption time of less than about 1 second, the coated substrate having mineral oxide particles and iron oxide particles coupled thereto, the coated substrate comprising:
a non-woven fabric having a weight of about 120 g/m2 or less according to ASTM D3776;
the mineral oxide particles derived from a solution or suspension comprising about 0.5 wt % to about 5 wt % mineral oxide particles; and
the iron oxide particles derived from a solution or suspension comprising about 0.5 wt % to about 5 wt % iron oxide particles, wherein the mineral oxide particles, the iron oxide particles, or both are functionalized with cysteic acid, a carboxylate thereof, or a combination thereof, wherein the mineral oxide particles are different from the iron oxide particles, and wherein about 90% or more of aspirated virus-sized particles are prevented from transmitting through the mask.
