1. An audio processing system for processing an audio bitstream, the audio processing system comprising:
a decoder for decoding the audio bitstream to determine audio frames, wherein each audio frame is temporally related to at least a video frame of a plurality of video frames;
a front-end component operating in a plurality of modes and configured to receive the audio frames and to process a current audio frame of the audio frames,
wherein the front-end component determines, from the plurality of modes, a selected mode for processing the current audio frame of the audio frames, wherein the selected mode is associated with a pre-assigned, mode-specific resampling factor that relates to an internal sampling frequency of the selected mode, wherein the current audio frame has audio samples with a sampling rate corresponding to the internal sampling frequency of the selected mode,
wherein the current audio frame has a frame length, and wherein at least a second audio frame of the audio frames has a different frame length, and wherein the front-end component is further configured to ensures that an audio frame rate of the current audio frame corresponds to a video frame rate of at least a first video frame of the plurality of video frames; and
a mode-dependent sample rate converter receiving the audio frames and using the resampling factor, wherein the resampling factor was chosen to match a quotient of a target external sampling frequency and a corresponding internal sampling frequency of the selected mode to output a reconstructed audio signal sampled at the target external sampling frequency, wherein the reconstructed audio signal is output with a block size corresponding to the external sampling frequency.
