1. A method of making an electrode for an energy storage system having an electrolyte, the method comprising:
providing a material chosen from silicon, graphene-silicon composite, carbon-sulfur, or lithium, the material having a thickness greater than 300 nm; and
forming a coating of parylene on the material such that the parylene coating forms a physical barrier preventing contact between the electrode and the electrolyte.
