1. A method for producing and recovering a lysate from cells contained in blood containing an anticoagulant, and analyzing one or more nucleic acids from the lysate, comprising:
a) agitating the blood within a bead beating system in the absence of any additive other than the anticoagulant, under conditions sufficient to lyse both a fungal pathogen and a bacterial pathogen and provide a lysate suitable for PCR amplification of DNA from the fungal pathogen, when present, and the bacterial pathogen, when present, said bead beating system comprising (i) a sample tube or blood collection tube and (ii) beads;
b) recovering the lysate from the sample tube or blood collection tube; and
c) analyzing one or more nucleic acids from the lysate, wherein the analyzing comprises PCR to amplify DNA from the fungal pathogen, when present, and DNA from the bacterial pathogen, when present.
