1. A staple cartridge assembly for use with a surgical stapler, comprising:
a cartridge body having a plurality of staple cavities and a plurality of staples, each staple being disposed within one of the plurality of staple cavities and configured to be deployed into tissue; and
a mixture disposed on at least a portion of the outer surface of the plurality of staple cavities and on at least a portion of the outer surface of the plurality of staples, the mixture comprising at least one matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitor and an adhesion coating comprising an absorbable polymer and an absorbable lubricant, the adhesion coating being configured to adhere the at least one MMP inhibitor to the outer surface, and the mixture being configured to be released from the outer surface upon deployment of the plurality of staples into tissue.
