1. An industrial automation controller comprising:
a housing that includes a forced convection chamber;
a processor;
one or more temperature sensors configured to monitor a core temperature of the processor;
a first fan module connected to the housing and comprising a first fan controlled by the processor, said first fan adapted to induce airflow through the forced convection chamber;
said processor configured to:
in response to the core temperature exceeding a desired level but below a select level, increase a fan speed of the first fan; and
in response to the core temperature exceeding the select level, issue a major fault and perform a controlled shutdown.
