1. A method comprising:
tracking, with a head mounted display (HMD) worn on a head of a listener, a direction of gaze of the listener;
displaying, with the HMD, a first augmented reality (AR) image and a second AR image;
playing, with the HMD, sound to the listener as binaural sound that externally localizes to the first AR image in response to the direction of gaze of the listener being at the first AR image; and
switching the sound from playing to the listener as the binaural sound to playing to the listener as stereo sound or mono sound in response to the direction of gaze of the listener being at the second AR image.
