1. A method for insulating a well annulus during cementing of the annulus, wherein the well comprises a first annulus and a second annulus larger than and concentric to the first annulus, the method comprising:
flushing the first annulus and second annulus of drilling fluids;
forming a thermally insulating fluid having a hydrocarbon base fluid, and a thermally dependent viscosifying gel;
pumping a train of spacer fluids into the first annulus to a desired depth, the train of spacer fluids comprising the thermally insulating fluid;
passing the train of spacer fluids from the first annulus to the second annulus such that the thermally insulating fluid is spotted at the desired depth; and
cementing the second annulus.
